LASER HAIR REDUCTION
There are many options for hair removal.
Threading, waxing, shaving, use of depilatory creams. All of them are however temporary with neither long term nor permanent reduction. They simply pull away the hair from the root and results last until the hair grows back.
The only option for long-term permanent hair reduction is use of LASERs. Many options such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), Long Pulsed Nd Yag LASERs etc have been used for permanent hair reduction but the LASER that has emerged as the gold standard globally for effective hair reduction is the diode LASER. The diode LASER emits red light at a wavelength of 800nm. This wavelength offers the best combination of effectiveness and minimal side effects.
How does the LASER treatment work
The LASER works on anagen hair (growing hair which constitute about 80% of hair in any area). The light is absorbed by the pigment in the base of the hair follicle which then heats up and destroys the cells which form the hair shaft.
How many sessions does one need
This is highly variable. Areas like the underarms and bikini areas respond very well and in about 6 sessions one could expect a 90% long term permanent reduction in hair. Areas such as the legs, back and arms are also very responsive. The face often requires more sessions but typically in about 9 sessions, one can expect a good reduction.
Is LASER painless
The LASER session is associated with a slight pricking sensation in the skin. It feels like the bite of a mosquito. Most people are very comfortable and some even fall off to sleep. The only area where people require a numbing gel is the bikini area as the skin in that area is highly sensitive.
Does the LASER work on everyone
The LASER works better on fairer skin types and coarse dark hair. It does not work on fine hair or grey hair. If the skin is pigmented, the LASER still works but will need to be done carefully as risks are higher. If you have excessive facial hair, then hormonal imbalances need to be looked for. In case of some hormonal imbalances like PCOS, several sessions are usually required.
What are the side effects
The side effects are minimal. Temporary redness, slight bumpiness of the skin, a tingling sensation and warmth in the area treated could last upto 24 hours. The only side effect to worry about is a LASER burn which is very uncommon in experienced hands.
